Alternatives to Tripods— Image-Stabilizing Equipment

I just got off my tripod soapbox and now here I am discussing image-stabilizing equipment again. I promise not to mention the word tripod in this blog. Rather, I’m here to focus on alternatives to the traditional three-legged device. They’re designed to eliminate the dreaded shaky shot minus the inconvenience of toting around a bulky accessory. The first device is a zoom lens. Yes, I know, you’re wondering how a lens is going to help stabilize your shots. This particular lens features technology that does the work of a tripo… (You get the idea). It’s called the Nikon AF-S VR … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Photo Accessory Gift Ideas

I admit that most of the social interaction I get being a work-at-home mom is with other moms whose kids my daughter plays with. So you’ll forgive me if I over-generalize and say that most of the family photographers I know are women. Frankly, I don’t feel as though this is a starling fact. I am the designated photographer in my family and while all of the professional photographers at my TV job are male many willingly admit that when it comes to still photography their wives are the ones that wield the camera in their households. So as Mother’s … Continue reading

Do You Hesitate to Ask Others to Take Your Picture?

How many times has this happened to you: You and your family are visiting a picturesque vacation spot and you want a group shot of the entire clan, only you forgot to pack your tripod and there isn’t anywhere for you to place your camera and use the self-timer feature. You want to ask a fellow visitor to snap a shot of your entire brood, but others in your group resist because they don’t want to “bother” a stranger to take the photo. What do you do? I’ve found myself in this type situation on many occasions and depending who … Continue reading

Small SLRs with a Twist

In previous blogs I’ve focused on the growing number of shrinking digital SLRs. Stroll through a camera shop (or any electronics store for that matter) and you will see shelves crammed with digital cameras of varying sizes. In the increasingly crowded marketplace of digital photo equipment, camera makers have had to distinguish themselves from their competitors in innovative ways. For Olympus that has meant reaching for a large audience with a smaller camera. Take a look at the company’s E-410 and E-510 models and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. The Olympus E-410 is noticeably small for an SLR camera. … Continue reading

Ultra-Compact Digital Cameras—-The Trend Continues

It was never my intent to feature an abundance of ultra-compact camera reviews in this blog particularly since I don’t especially care for these types of digital cameras that squeeze so many features (albeit successfully) in such a compact space. However, since the trend in ultra-compact digital cameras is growing at such a rapid pace I would be doing potential fans of these digicams a disservice if I simply ignored their presence on camera store shelves. With that said here are two more ultra-compact digital camera options that have become hot sellers in recent months: SAMSUNG NV10 I know what … Continue reading

More Ultra-compact Digital Camera Options

Regular readers of this blog know I am not a huge fan of ultra-compact digital cameras. It’s not because they lack the ability to capture frameworthy photos. The reason I don’t own one is because ultra-compacts simply don’t fit my shooting needs. Conversely, my swinging single brother who is not a snap happy parent like myself swears by his ultra-compact camera and never leaves home without it. (And why should he considering the camera is practically as small as his wad of credit cards.) I’ve reviewed ultra-compacts in previous blogs, but I recently had a chance to experiment with a … Continue reading

Photography Week in Review for December 31, 2007-January 5, 2008

If you were too busy recovering from your New Year’s celebration to get your daily dose of the Photography Blog now is your chance to catch up. This week I completed my series on eBay photography. Have you ever tried selling your stuff on eBay? If you have then you know the key to selling your Internet auction items for as much as possible is to display your products in the best light. This week’s blogs provided tips on how to do just that. I also spent some time covering action and adventure photography. Just because it’s bone-chilling cold in … Continue reading
