Halloween Shots: Don’t Forget Fido

(A real hot dog.) Take a look at this photo. This is the Halloween costume I wanted my 7-year-old to wear trick-or-treating. She refused. She also turned up her nose at Old Navy’s other tasty costumes, including the cupcake, ice cream cone and hamburger. I told her that she would surely score double treats if she went door-to-door looking as cute as the hot dog in the photo above. Actually, I bet the dog would rake in an even bigger haul by donning Old Navy’s Banana Split costume for pups. I know I would surely snap a shot of a … Continue reading

Affordable Digital Cameras

They might not have big names like Sony, Nikon, Canon or Kodak, but they also don’t come with the big price tags either. These days the digital camera market has grown to accommodate lower-priced brands whose products can compete with the big boys of photography. One digital camera maker in particular, Concord, is creating quite a buzz with its new 6 megapixel model, which features a retail price of just $229.99. The Concord 6340z digital camera features a 3x optical zoom plus a 4x digital zoom, a macro feature allowing you to take pictures as close as 2 inches, and … Continue reading

Snapping Summer Memories—Going Digital

Since I failed miserably at my New Year’s resolution to get outdoors and capture more breathtaking winter shots I’ve decided to double up this summer. I plan to work overtime capturing my family’s summertime activities. And I know I am not alone. Summer is the time of year when most families head out on their annual vacations and snap happy parents’ give their fingers quite a workout. For those of you who are still relying on those disposable point-and-shoots to capture your sunny day memories perhaps the Summer of 2008 is when you go digital. I know. I know. Making … Continue reading

SNAP! Making Mother’s Day Memories

If you are a mom and the official family photographer then getting a photo gift of your children for Mother’s Day is probably not in your future. Unless it’s a framed shot you took yourself. I’ve had a few of those over the years. Don’t get me wrong. I am very appreciative of the thought that went into the gifts. For example, a couple of years ago my mom got me a beautiful sterling silver frame for Mother’s Day. Naturally, she didn’t want to present me with an empty frame (or worse, leave the sepia shot of a random mother … Continue reading

Getting Rid of Red-Eye and Saying Bye-Bye to Blurry Shots

If you thought having a green-eyed monster in your family was bad try having a digital camera filled with dozens of red-eyed ones. Those dreaded red-eye shots–dastardly enough to mar pictures of even the cutest child or pet. They are annoying… yet avoidable if you follow these tips: My brother calls them devil eyes (my other brother refers to it as the “Curse of the Cat Eye”), but the red color (and appearance that your subject’s eyes are glowing) has nothing to do with Satan at all. Rather, the red color comes from light reflecting off of your subject’s retinas. … Continue reading

Camera Care Tips

My 3-year-old daughter is a self-described “big girl” now and consequently she doesn’t like me to push her on the swings at the park. Instead, she feels it is her job to push me. Frankly, I enjoy the ride, and the other day it gave me the opportunity to witness an unfortunate scene. To placate her screaming toddler one of the moms at the park handed her son what looked to be a very expensive camera. Within seconds of getting his hands on the device he tossed it into a nearby sandbox. (Surprise, surprise.) I winced and wondered what might … Continue reading

Getting To Know Your Camera’s Features

In a previous blog I went out on a limb (not really) and estimated that a mere 15% of amateur photographers regularly use (or are familiar with) all of their camera’s features. Have you taken the time to really experiment with your digital camera? Making time to do so is not always an easy task. What’s more, trying to comprehend the wording in some of those camera manuals is often enough to discourage any new camera owner from paging beyond the part that gives directions on how to install the battery. Just point, shoot and be satisfied with whatever image … Continue reading

Are You Using All Of Your Camera’s Features?

Perhaps a better question might be: “Are you familiar with all of your camera’s options?” My inspiration for this blog comes from a playgroup date my daughter and I had earlier this week. The mom who was hosting our playgroup had family visiting from another state-—her brother and his wife. While her brother was waiting for his wife to get ready for a day of sightseeing he grabbed our hostess’ camera and started taking of shots of the kids playing. He got a great shot of one of his nieces jumping rope. When he showed his prize shot to his … Continue reading

Reasons To Use Digital Cameras At Your Wedding

I’m not sure digital cameras were even around when I got married. Just kidding. Half-kidding at least. I got married before the digital photography phenomenon evolved into the all-encompassing trend that it is today. These days most couples don’t hesitate to hire wedding photographers who deal exclusively in digital equipment. In fact, a growing number of brides are now actively seeking digital photographers because they want the opportunity to share their wedding pictures online. Old-fashion photo albums are becoming a thing of the past. All the engaged couples I know have already assembled an online site dedicated to their weddings. … Continue reading
