Ultra-Compact Digital Cameras—-The Trend Continues

It was never my intent to feature an abundance of ultra-compact camera reviews in this blog particularly since I don’t especially care for these types of digital cameras that squeeze so many features (albeit successfully) in such a compact space. However, since the trend in ultra-compact digital cameras is growing at such a rapid pace I would be doing potential fans of these digicams a disservice if I simply ignored their presence on camera store shelves. With that said here are two more ultra-compact digital camera options that have become hot sellers in recent months: SAMSUNG NV10 I know what … Continue reading

More Ultra-compact Digital Camera Options

Regular readers of this blog know I am not a huge fan of ultra-compact digital cameras. It’s not because they lack the ability to capture frameworthy photos. The reason I don’t own one is because ultra-compacts simply don’t fit my shooting needs. Conversely, my swinging single brother who is not a snap happy parent like myself swears by his ultra-compact camera and never leaves home without it. (And why should he considering the camera is practically as small as his wad of credit cards.) I’ve reviewed ultra-compacts in previous blogs, but I recently had a chance to experiment with a … Continue reading

Camera Care Tips

My 3-year-old daughter is a self-described “big girl” now and consequently she doesn’t like me to push her on the swings at the park. Instead, she feels it is her job to push me. Frankly, I enjoy the ride, and the other day it gave me the opportunity to witness an unfortunate scene. To placate her screaming toddler one of the moms at the park handed her son what looked to be a very expensive camera. Within seconds of getting his hands on the device he tossed it into a nearby sandbox. (Surprise, surprise.) I winced and wondered what might … Continue reading

Cutting Edge Camcorders

Is there anyone who doesn’t have a camcorder these days? Take a trip to Hawaii or a local high school football game and you’d probably answer no. But, I have news for you. A recent study found that camcorder sales are down 6% from last year. Hard to believe, isn’t it? With the amount of videos being shared on the Internet nowadays one would believe that the camcorder is at the height of popularity. But, apparently a relatively small percentage of videographers (especially the ones who upload video on YouTube) use traditional camcorders. Instead, studies found they use more PC-friendly … Continue reading

Cutting Edge Cameras and Accessories

Don’t blink or you’ll miss all the advances taking place in the world of photography. Tis the season for camera manufacturers to unveil new products they hope will be ready in time for the holiday shopping season. The following examples are so cutting edge they may not complete final production in time to sit under your tree this year–but there’s always next year. CASIO The company recently announced it has developed a digital camera that can shoot at a rate of 60 photos per second at full resolution. Amazing, right? According to the company, the new camera has a large … Continue reading

Protecting Your Camera From Mother Nature

Don’t leave home without your camera. How many times have you heard that reminder prior to leaving on vacation? Personally, my camera is one of the first items I pack. I don’t dare leave home without it. In fact, there have been occasions when I’ve had my camera case primed and ready and completely overlooked packing the proper toiletries. That said you shouldn’t be surprised that I have done a ton of research regarding camera cases and other accessories. Since my family travels to Hawaii a couple of times a year (and we practically live at the beach while we … Continue reading

More Common Sense Tips To Capturing A Frame-Worthy Picture

I caught the last few minutes of Oprah’s show yesterday when she was paying tribute to the children of the men and women who lost their lives during the 9/11 terror attacks. Show producers created a video montage of still photos the families had taken of their loved ones and set it to music. It was a touching tribute that caused many of the children to shed tears. (I’m sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the entire audience or in the homes of Oprah’s viewers either—-I know it made me choke up.) To me, the picture montage spoke to … Continue reading

Common Sense Tips To Capturing Frame-Worthy Pictures

My last blog entry while helpful (to some) was done a bit tongue-in-cheek. Let’s face it; every person wielding a camera is looking for that one great shot to admire for years to come. Whether it’s a brilliant Hawaiian sunset or your child’s first smile. Pictures are the closest way any of us comes to freezing time. So what can you do to make sure you don’t squander these precious moments? Here are some tips: Stand Still (My blog title didn’t lie–I told you these were common sense tips.) If you are taking a shot of your child planting her … Continue reading

Photography Week in Review for September 3-9, 2007

Michele and I have gone “digital”. Well we went digital a long time ago, but we expressed to you all, how much more we enjoyed our film camera, than that of the current technology. However, we refocused our outlook and are providing you with dozens of articles on digital a week. Let’s see what went on in the photography blog this week: The Three Biggest No No’s People Do With Their Photographs There are so many things that people do with their photographs or have done with their photographs in the past, that sincerely make me cringe. Of course, it … Continue reading

Snapping Keepers Of Your Kids

Taking pictures of your kids is one thing… finding ones that are worth keeping is an entirely different story… at least in my home. I’ve taken thousands of pictures of my daughter. I’m not kidding—thousands. Of those, I’d estimate only about half are worth showing off. To say photographing children can be a challenge is an understatement. Because I shoot with a traditional film camera I don’t even bother getting it out if my child is not well fed and rested. It simply isn’t worth it. Young children are unpredictable. When they aren’t flashing bunny ears behind their siblings’ heads … Continue reading
