Extreme Shooting

In my last blog I shared my resolution for 2008—-take more winter action shots. I am a whimp when it comes to cold weather and as such I often miss Kodak moments of my daughter frolicking in the snow and ice. That’s my New Year’s resolution. However, I am mindful that not everyone lives in a place where it snows and therefore some of the same incentives don’t apply. But, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t incorporate more adventure photography into your daily or monthly shooting regime. When out in nature you will inevitably come across situations that requires special … Continue reading

Entertaining in a Heat Wave

More power to you if you are willing to host an outdoor summer bash without the aid of a pool. This season’s record hot temperatures have put a damper on some summer shindigs simply because it is unsafe to be outside in certain parts of the nation during the heat of the day. If you have a swimming pool, then entertaining outside during a heat wave doesn’t seem as extreme. However, if you don’t have access to thousands of gallons of chlorinated water to cool off your party guests, then you need to get creative. Pull out the Slip-n-Slide for … Continue reading

Are You Better Than Good?

How would you rate your picture-taking skills? Would you categorize yourself as above-average? Once you have been shooting for a while and find that photography is more of a passion than a passing fancy, you might consider making money from your talent. Depending on how much time and money you have to invest in a photo business, you could go all out and really turn your passion into profit. However, these days most people, who are trying to break into the world of professional photography, start off on a smaller scale by selling their best images online. The boom in … Continue reading

Animated Doesn’t Always Mean Appropriate

I have a confession; I actually saw two of the movies that were nominated for a 2012 Best Picture Oscar: “The Help” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” So, yeah, I guess pigs do fly from time to time. That monumental accomplishment hasn’t happened since giving birth to my daughter more than seven years ago, so you’ll have to excuse my forgetfulness. What can I say; parenthood = memory loss. Typically, if I recognize any title nominated for an Academy Award it’s from the Animated Feature category. That’s where I really connect with Oscar since becoming a parent. In fact, … Continue reading

Chinese New Year is in full swing around the world. Welcoming the Year of the Dragon with fireworks, long noodles and dancing lions is something you don’t want to miss capturing with your camera. Delicious Chinese dishes and prancing wildcats are easy to snap in the daylight, but what about all those incredible nighttime Lunar New Year aerial pyrotechnics displays? If you are planning to document the many festive firework shows that will be exploding in the skies during the remainder of the 15-day New Year’s celebration, consider the following tips: Tripod: It is extremely challenging to capture decent shots … Continue reading

Lighting from All Angles

Ideally, all photos would be snapped using natural lighting. While it’s true that you cannot control the sun, there are many ways you can capture stunning shots when you are taking photos in the great outdoors. One of the most popular techniques for snapping frame worthy shots when you are at the mercy of Mother Nature is backlighting. Not only is the technique popular, it’s also extremely effective and relatively simple to master. Start by making sure the sun is in front of you. Light should be aimed directly at the camera, and your subject should be lit from the … Continue reading

High-Action Fall Photographs

High school football is a huge deal in our small city, and with Homecoming week festivities kicking off today, I expect snap happy parents will be working overtime this weekend. In addition, to the big dance and big game, the local high school is hosting a massive pep rally where cheerleaders will take center stage. Our neighbor is beside herself right now as her daughter is the captain of the cheerleading squad and is on the Homecoming court. Basically, my friend will be living with a camera attached to her face the entire weekend. I don’t think she has to … Continue reading
