Going Retro

Retro photos are all the rage these days. At least according to my 17-year-old cousin, who recently set a date to take her senior pictures. The professional photographer she is working with convinced her to include some “nostalgic” photos in her portrait package. Does anyone else think it’s strange that a 17-year-old is posing for nostalgic type photos? What exactly is retro for a high school senior? Baggy pants and denim overalls? My understanding is that nostalgic photography tries to evoke feelings associated with a long forgotten era. The 1990s seem not so far removed from the 21st century, but … Continue reading

You Know It’s Going To Be A Bad Day When…

Your football team is losing on national television and that’s the least of your troubles. I don’t know… maybe it’s because I spent more than a decade in broadcast news and know how easily things can go wrong on live TV that I found this next incident so relatable. You might too… Did you see Sunday night’s game between the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks on NBC? If you did then you likely noticed the game was delayed for 10-minutes while NBC TV crews scrambled to retrieve a fallen camera from the turf. That’s right; a TV camera mounted … Continue reading

Making the Bed When You’re Going to Get Back in It

We have some ongoing debates around our house. It’s truly amazing how persistent and stubborn my teenagers can be and I’m not at all sure how they came by that character trait! One of our most lasting and, as yet, unsolvable debate is the “Why should I make my bed when I’m going to get back in it?!” deliberation. I’ve used all sorts of Mom arguments–the cats might get in there and sleep during the day and then you’ll have cat hair in your bed (kid solution: Pile the blankets on top in a heap and shut the bedroom door); … Continue reading

Retro Mondays: Oscar Moments to Remember

I am in excitement mode. I love Christmas and Halloween, but after those two holidays, the biggest holiday of the year to me is Oscar Night. Well, actually, I should say Oscar Day because for me, it is an all day event. Coverage in our house starts around noon and does not end for at least the next 12 hours. Here is a look back at some interesting Oscar moments: We Liked Her, We Really Liked Her She already had one Oscar sitting on her shelf (for Norma Rae), but when Sally Field won again in 1985 for Places in … Continue reading

Retro Mondays: The Hula Hoop

I know we all like to hear about the latest celebrity gossip, know what fashions are hot, and just read the latest pop culture news in general. BUT, there are times when I like to reminisce about pop culture’s past. After all, there has been a lot of stuff that could classify as pop culture happen in the past 100 years in this wonderful country. So, on Mondays, I am going to start doing a retro blog. I will pick something that made an impact on us and write about it. But, I would like your help. Let me know … Continue reading

Blog 2000 & Roller Skating: Check It Out!

This is my 2000th article posted here at Families.com. I started with the first batch of bloggers back in 2005. Fitness was my primary blog and I’ve since taken on Marriage and Baby, but my first love – fitness, remains. I thought about doing a retrospective here for my 2000th blog, but instead, I wanted to talk about a new passion that I’ve got and spend some more time exploring it. So I hope you’ll join me here for my 2000th blog and Roller Skating. The Fun Way To Get Exercise As many of my regular readers may know, I’ve … Continue reading

Earning Money for Furniture

I’m trading in my clutter for some nice, new bedroom furniture. I’ve always dreamed of some gorgeous bedroom furniture. The set we have now belonged to my husband for more years than he can remember. As a bachelor, he purchased it at an estate sale. He was going for more function than form and the idea that bigger is better, I think. It does have a ton of storage, I do have to admit. In fact, the headboard with its attached  sets of doors and drawers have more storage than we have clothes. I’ve taken to storing books in them. … Continue reading

Having Each Other’s Back

Today I want to talk about kind of a dumb thing I got into the habit of doing, but that I realized one day could be hurtful. Sometimes I have a tendency to make too much fun of Jon in front of others. I’ve talked to him about it and he doesn’t seem to mind, but nonetheless I want to work on it. The habit was born out of our shared college experience. The group of friends we were in playfully messed with each other all of the time, especially the boys. I kind of had to thicken my skin … Continue reading

Disney Interactive Teases Big Game Releases for 2013

“Cars 2: The Game” made even less of an impression than the film As much as I’m a big Disney fan and a big video game fan, I’m not into Disney Interactive. That’s the company’s video game arm. So when a Business Insider article reveals that CFO Jay Rasulo hints that 2013 is going to see two big titles come out in the first half of the year, my response is a resounding “meh.” The first title is “Epic Mickey 2,” due out at the beginning of 2013. I enjoyed “Epic Mickey” and the details I’ve seen for its sequel … Continue reading

Does Your Child’s School Bus Have Air Conditioning?

Summer weather can include excessive, and dangerous, heat. In many parts of the country, the heat doesn’t dissipate just because a new school year has started. Does your child’s school bus have air conditioning? It is very important that parents find out the answer to that question. Last Summer, there were several parents in New York who were alarmed because their child’s school bus did not have air conditioning. The children were attending a Summer school program that was designed for students who had special needs. The kids were coming home drenched in sweat. The parents were upset because their … Continue reading
