Have Camera Will Travel Part 2by Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 17 Apr 2008 11:34 PM I know avid photographers who remember to pack their camera cleaner but forget to bring along clean underwear on vacation. In my previous blog I provided a list of some photography essentials you don't want to leave home without. In this blog I thought it might be helpful to list some shooting reminders that are often overlooked by travelers taking aim in foreign lands. Tip #1---When you are shooting subjects in foreign countries and you don't speak the native language, the simple act of smiling, pointing to your camera and then pointing to the subject is enough to communicate that you'd like to photograph them. But as I mentioned in a previous blog it's always a good idea to research native customs before traveling to a foreign country. Tip #2---If you are shooting extensively in remote areas look for natural frames rather than relying on your camera's rectangle to frame your picture. Branches, canyons walls, and other rock formations can help enhance your subject naturally. Tip #3---Spice up your shots. Shoot a variety of angles from varying distances. When shooting portraits, try widening a bit to include the setting around your subject. Then, zoom in to capture details. Tip #4---Don't be stingy with your shots. Make the most of a situation. If an unique event is unfolding before your eyes don't waste time worrying about filling up your camera's memory card or tearing through a roll of film. Shoot first and delete later. Tip #5---When taking action shots of family members and friends remind them that safety comes first. People often exceed the limits of their abilities to show off for the camera. I've seen this happen on more than one occasion (specifically during a skiing trip to Lake Tahoe with an ex-boyfriend who wanted me to capture his smooth moves on the slopes... he lost his right contact in the process)---it's better to be safe than sorry.
