More Picture-Perfect Prom Photos

There’s more to prom than just pretty dresses, tuxedos and a fleet of limos. There’s also the fancy updos, half-dos and do-overs. Oh, and the flowers. For girls, a corsage can make or break a prom ensemble. However, despite its significance, it’s rare that floral arrangements worn on a giddy girl’s wrist receive the documentation they deserve. When taking photos on prom night, don’t overlook defining details such as corsages and boutonnieres. If you are planning to preserve memories of prom in a scrapbook you’ll want to snap every aspect of the occasion. In order to retell the story about … Continue reading

More Picture-Perfect Layouts

As I mentioned in my previous posts, you really can’t create a decent scrapbook layout if your shots stink. Learning how to take pretty photos will go a long way to making your page designs pop. Fortunately, it’s not too hard to hone your picture-taking skills. What’s more, even if you don’t master channeling your inner Ansel Adams, there are ways you can add spice to your scrapbook images. For example, when in doubt, consider switching to black-and-white. Colorless prints are great options for wedding, anniversary, or prom layouts. For starters, black-and-white photos are quite flattering. Not only do they … Continue reading

More Tips for Winter Photo Shoots

If you live anywhere near the Upper Midwest portion of the United States then I’m sure you would agree that Old Man Winter has hung around long enough. During the last four months we have been hammered with snowstorm after snowstorm; endured brutal wind chills and chipped off more layers of ice than most Alaskans do in a lifetime. Still, there are times when I have peered out my bedroom window and wished I was hearty enough to brave the elements in order to capture some frameworthy winter scenes. Alas, I have not made good on my New Year’s resolution … Continue reading

Tips for Taking Great eBay Photos—FOCUS

You’ve got the perfect camera now it’s time to point, shoot and get those pictures posted on eBay. After all, if you want to sell your Internet auction items for as much as possible you need to snap to it… and remember to focus. In my previous blog I mentioned the importance of investing in a sound tripod and making sure your pictures are clutter-free. Now, we’re moving on to some solid photography lessons—namely focusing. How many times have you seen fuzzy pictures on eBay? I’m sure the blurred shots didn’t prompt you to place a bid on the item, … Continue reading

Staging Your House for Less

Something about spring makes me start watching all of those home shows. You know the ones where couples and sometimes singles look for the perfect house, fix up and put their homes on the market or just do some renovations. Maybe it is because spring is the most popular time of the year to list a house and get a buyer. While the housing market has promise of turning around, there is still quite a lot of “stock,” houses on the market. This means that in order to make yours sell, it needs to shine. One thing that helps house … Continue reading

Glam-o-Rama

I’m not on Twitter, but I often get sent links to updates when a friend or family member shares a photo. Recently, I’ve noticed a trend in the Instagram images I’ve been encouraged to view by my friends’ teenage children. The photos are super glam, and I’m not talking about the ones taken on prom night. Years ago, you would have never seen pictures of sultry-looking teens in cyberspace. In fact, when I was growing up, the only time teens were allowed to be photographed looking 10 years older than they actually were is when they paid for the privilege … Continue reading

Prepping for Holiday Shooting

Tis the season for taking pictures of food. The holidays are right around the corner which means many of us will be spending a lot more time in the kitchen cooking up our family’s favorite dishes. Whether it’s Aunt Sue’s famous Halloween Dirt Cake or Grandma’s scrumptious Christmas cookies, there is no shortage of good eats to chow down on from now until the New Year. Since we eat with our eyes first, you can bet that your favorite dish will be looking its best before it gets to the table. However, before you dig in you should consider snapping … Continue reading

School Photo Tips

I always dreaded school picture day. Always. Even as a first grader. Even as a Catholic schoolgirl, who wore a uniform to class everyday, regardless of whether it was picture day. I just despised picture day. And it wasn’t as though I was forced to wear an elaborate dress that compromised my playground activity. Nor did I have long flowing hair that required me to sit like a statue until picture time in order to avoid looking like the Amy Winehouse. I simply couldn’t stand smiling on demand. If your young child has similar issues with school picture day, then … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Graduation

Whereas my daughter is far from graduating from school, she is quite familiar with “Pomp and Circumstance” (she uses the tune and inserts her own words: “Peanut butter and jelly… always sticks to my belly…”). She’s counting down the days to her friend’s kindergarten graduation. In addition, we have also been invited to my friend’s daughter’s 8th grade commencement. Even though it’s not my child marching toward her diploma I will still be bringing my camera along to the ceremonies. Millions of snap happy parents around the world will be aiming their cameras at their proud grads in the weeks … Continue reading

Choosing a Photo Retreat

From Bali to Monte Carlo, Nice to Honolulu some of the world’s most exotic cities are serving as the inspiration for amazing photo retreats. Have you ever participated in a photo retreat? Those who have often remark that they help nurture creativity, expose them to extraordinary scenes and allow them to experiment with new compositions. Whenever I fly home to visit my parents in Hawaii I always promise myself that I am going to make time to participate in a local photo retreat. I’ve done the research on one in particular located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hawaii Photo … Continue reading
