The Lure of Used Cameras

My dream camera costs $3,000. I don’t have $3,000. Perhaps that’s why I don’t own my dream camera. Santa still hasn’t delivered my Dyson, so I’m thinking he probably isn’t going to be filling my stocking with a Nikon D800 any time soon. As much as reality bites, I know I am not alone. While there are dozens of high-quality, luxury DSLR cameras on the market, most people don’t have the funds to purchase them new. For shutterbugs looking to get their hands on cutting-edge picture-taking tools without breaking the bank, there is the used camera option. High-tech cameras can … Continue reading

The Camera Doesn’t Make the Photographer

I’ve been lusting after the Nikon D7000 for a while now. Unfortunately, I don’t have $1,200 plus to drop on my dream camera, so for now all I can do is drool over the one my friend has. The same friend who reminds me: “A camera doesn’t make the photographer.” Easy to say when you are wielding a DSLR with 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor, 6 fps continuous shooting and breathtaking full 1080p HD movies with full time autofocus. Still, as much as I would love to be shooting with the rock star Nikon, there is a bit of truth … Continue reading

Camera Lust

A friend of mine just purchased a Nikon D7000—-my dream camera. I lust after the DSLR in much the same way I do a Dyson, and I know I am not alone. The Nikon D7000 is considered the best non-professional DSLR on the market. However, at $1,500 it’s not exactly within my economic reach. To temper my longing for the incredible piece of photographic hardware I have been asking myself if I really need all the bells and whistles that it offers. I do… okay, maybe I don’t. Actually, I do. Actually, I want them more than I need them, … Continue reading

Mommy Manicures

When was the last time you received a manicure? A real manicure. Not streaks of Plum Passion painted on by your 5-year-old. I’m talking about the real deal; professional nail treatment courtesy of a hired hand. I’m pretty sure the last time I paid someone to push back my cuticles and buff my nails was the day before I got married. That was more than eight years ago. I remember thinking how nice it would be to enjoy a day at the spa following the birth of our daughter. That was more than six years ago. Back then I would … Continue reading

How to Get the Most Out of Your Camera

Over the years I have had several different cameras, some film and some digital. One thing that I have learned is that what you know about your camera has a dramatic impact on what you are able to achieve with it. A camera is just a tool, and the better you get at using it, the better results you will have. It seems so obvious, and yet that is not what many advertisers would have you believe. Camera ads aim to convince you that their camera will take the best pictures. The truth is, cameras don’t take pictures any more … Continue reading

What Is Your Dream Camera?

Right now I shoot with a Nikon D3000 and a 50mm prime. I actually love my current setup; it is a great system and I get pretty good results with it. It does have its limitations, however. For one, my camera does not have HD video, and that is something I would like for taking video of my family. The ISO (light sensitivity) is also limited, which means my pictures get noisy in low light conditions, even with the fast prime lens. (I do not use flash unless absolutely necessary.) My camera body is also geared towards those who are … Continue reading

My Dream Camera

There’s only one thing keeping me from owning my dream camera. Make that 1000 things… before sales tax. I need roughly $1000 to get the DSLR camera of my dreams: a brand-new Nikon D90. I need about $1,300 if I want to get the entire kit, but I digress. The mid-priced high-tech camera is no where in my budget, yet I can’t help but lust after its fab features, including: a 12.3-megapixel sensor, which helps capture stunning high-quality images; sensitivity ranging from ISO 200 to 3,200, plus L1 (100) and H1 (6,400); the high-resolution 3-inch LCD screen (the 920,000-pixel display … Continue reading

The Day a Lump Entered My Marriage – Part I

For National Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought I’d share an experience that affected Wayne and I deeply. The Find In 2001, I kept experiencing a series of sharp pains in my right breast. I first noticed it as I was raking leaves and then chasing Murph through them. Whenever I bounced, I’d feel a piercing stab through my nipple. In general that breast had seemed more tender than usual at the time, but any kind of jolting movement suddenly brought on that lancing hot sensation. I went inside and felt around the area and couldn’t believe what I was … Continue reading

Cameras: Knowing When To Upgrade

When you have your first child? When your kids start playing sports? When you hobby requires it? When do you know when it is time to trade in your current camera for one that has more bells and whistles? The answer: When you become consistently displeased with your pictures. At least that’s what did it for me. Let me back up a bit. My grandfather was a professional photographer. A year before he died (nearly 10 years ago) he bought me a Nikon camera for my birthday. It was a major upgrade from my well-worn (but very trustworthy) Ricoh, which … Continue reading
