The Downside of the Digital Photography Revolution

Many of the videographers I used to work with when I was in TV news have branched out and are now making money taking still photos with professional-grade digital cameras. I had the chance to catch up with one of them Saturday night and discovered that the digital photography revolution has some hidden downsides most amateur shutterbugs may not be aware of. My former colleague’s biggest complaint is that digital cameras are so affordable these days it has created a wave of amateur photographers thinking they can make a quick buck. My pal claims that in an effort to generate … Continue reading

Hello Kitty Says Hello to New Travel Job

Regular readers of this blog know how completely obsessed my young daughter is with Hello Kitty. The popular fictional feline with the oversized face is a staple in our home. From shirts to pens, purses to sheets, pillows, sandals, stickers, sunglasses, hair pins, tote bags, duffels, backpacks, hats and banks, Japan’s No.1 export has invaded every inch of our living space and it looks as though she will be sticking around for a while. Hello Kitty is known for winning over the hearts of girls my daughter’s age, but now her cuteness is being marketed to another sector of the … Continue reading

All I Want for Christmas is a New Photo Printer

It’s true, but the one photo item I really, really want is listed at the end of this blog. But, getting back to the photo printers… if you are an avid photographer who is all about instant gratification, then you likely find it hard to live without an in-home photo printer. For do-it-yourself photographers inkjet printers are the key to getting your pics ASAP. Fortunately, prices on photo printers have fallen steadily over the past few years. If you are in the market for one, there are three important factors you should consider before forking over the money to take … Continue reading

Kodak’s New HD Line

Are you familiar with Oprah Winfrey’s “Favorite Things” show? Each year the talk show queen reveals the products she simply can’t live without and shares them with her audience. A few years ago she gave everyone in her studio audience a new Kodak digital camera. (Where was I?) After I got a look at the new items Kodak is releasing in time for the 2007 holiday season, I had to wonder if some lucky members in Oprah’s audience wouldn’t be walking away with one of them this year. Last month Kodak unveiled two new HD-enabled cameras–the Kodak EasyShare Z812 IS … Continue reading

Sometimes Odd But New Uses for Old Stuff

There is a certain addiction in our household. I can almost say it is a competition sometimes. We all enjoy discovering new uses for items that are used for something else entirely. The stranger the use the better, though we all agree it must be practical too. I have written articles about lots of the things we reuse often, however I plan to write some new ones too. In honor of the new articles that are coming, I thought I would recap my favorite reusable items. A Clever and Very Frugal Way to Use Torn Panty Hose I am completely … Continue reading

Digital Photography 101: Getting To Know Your Camera

If you’ve been debating about whether you should join the digital photography revolution (you’ve shot with a standard camera all your life, but everyone you know has gone digital) then this blog is for you. This is the third posting in a series of articles I am doing on the merits of digital photography. We’ve already covered an introduction to this hot trend and reviewed some of the most popular digital cameras on the market. Today we continue the series with a look at some digital camera functions. MEMORY CARDS In a previous blog I explained that digital cameras capture … Continue reading

Photography Week in Review for July 16th to 22nd

The Photography blog has been very quiet for quite some time now, but this week things are just starting to get stirred up a little bit. There is much more to come. The photography blog now has two new bloggers with plenty of new information and helpful techniques to be offered. This week there were only three new additions to the photography blog, because we just got started, but we are on a roll and will have new information for you daily. We are however, interested in what you would like to see in addition to what we have planned, … Continue reading

Using Picnik to Work With Your Photographs

I have been using a wonderful online resource for working with my photographs. It’s called “Picnik” and it’s a free online tool that you can use. I have found it to be one of the easiest ways to edit my pictures. You can resize, rotate and crop your pictures. Not only can you do the basics in editing pictures but you can create custom-made effects. There are a variety of fonts, shapes and customizable frames that can be used. There are also advanced editing tools available for the more knowledgeable user. Of course, for additional features you can pay a … Continue reading

Christmas Showdown: Parents vs. Toy Packaging

Some call it “wrap rage,” others call it a nuisance; I like to refer to it as a parent’s worst nightmare. Moms and dads with young children, you know the pain I am describing: The agony of liberating new toys from their plastic packaging. It used to be that on Christmas morning all a parent needed nearby was a camera, a pad and pen to jot down who gave what to whom, and maybe, maybe, a single pair of scissors to release a few stubborn pieces of tape. (Though, if someone in the family had sharp teeth you could skip … Continue reading

Hair Raising Dilemma: Who Calls the Shots in Your Family?

I didn’t have to take a brush to my daughter’s hair until she was nearly 2 years old. She simply didn’t have enough to warrant doing so. (This is how her hair looked until she was about 19 months. Sort of.) Currently, her locks don’t grace her shoulders or flow to the middle of her back like her best friend’s, but she couldn’t care less. Given her genetic make up she likely won’t have luxuriously, thick, sleek locks that blow seductively when windswept like overpaid supermodels. Rather, she will have to make do with thin, wispy hair that struggles to … Continue reading
