An Easy Way to Start Your Genealogy Blog

Genealogy and technology are two things that are becoming increasingly interconnected. However, not all genealogists are going to be tech savvy enough to know how to get their very own genealogy blog started. MyFamily.com provides an easy way for genealogists to get their own genealogy blog online. I think that most genealogists are using the internet in order to do their research. Websites like Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, and the National Archives have become extremely popular. It is fairly easy to get started using sites like those to get some genealogy research done, and to add to your family tree. Problems begin … Continue reading

Tips for Organizing Your Photos

There was a time when I enjoyed designing our family’s annual Christmas photo card. Back then all I had to do was find a single stunner, place it on the card and BAM!–done. These days, though, some card designs allow you to feature six or more different pictures. So many choices, so little time. This time of year I typically kick myself for not being as organized. I have a semi-method behind my madness, but it’s nothing to brag about. Whether you’re trying to get vacation, birthday, or wedding shots in order, it’s important to have a system that makes … Continue reading

Backing Up Your Digital Photos

Here’s a scary thought…your computer just crashed, and all your photos are gone in the blink of an eye or the strike of lightening. All of them. Gone. I don’t think any of us are prepared to walk away from all our photos without some emotional attachment. I know I’m not. If you ask many people what they’d grab out of their burning house, many would reply that they’d save their photos (or these days the computer that houses those photos). They’re the physical reminder of the memories we’ve built up over the years. So it makes sense that we’d … Continue reading

Organizing Your Photos: Printed Photos

If you’re anything like me, you still have a shoebox full of printed photos. They may be old photos, or they may be new depending on your camera preference, but one thing is sure: they’re not doing anyone any good sitting in a shoebox. So let’s get organized! (Organization is one of my favorite things, by the way.) I’ve stopped printing many of my photos. With the switch to digital, I now find myself printing only the ones that I have a specific purpose for. So while I’m not compounding my shoebox problem, I haven’t taken the time to remedy … Continue reading

Sorting Photos—-Where to Begin

If you are like me it is impossible to sort and catalog pictures as soon as you get them developed. In some cases I have gone months without sorting my photos and I end up with a stack of pictures taller than my 3-year-old precariously balanced near my desk. So what do you do when your picture mountain has grown to epic heights? I set aside time and start sorting chronologically. Regardless of whether you are using the pictures to add to a scrapbook, a frame, or just placing them in a traditional photo album, it’s best to have a … Continue reading

Organizing All Those Photos

It’s a dilemma all snap happy parents face at one time or another—how to organize the thousands of pictures accumulated from just a month’s worth of shooting. (When you’re a snap happy parent “thousands” is not an exaggeration.) The following are a few strategies I use to help manage my mountain of photos that grows by the day. PURGE—–Know when to hold them… know when to throw them. Not exactly classic Kenny Rogers, but you get the idea. Keep the frame-worthy shots and toss the rest. Don’t hang on to blurry, redundant, unflattering, or bad shots. This strategy is effective … Continue reading

A Grandmother’s Suggestion For Family Photos

My mother is now a grandmother of 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Over the years, she has amassed quite a collection of photos–portraits, school photos, candid shots. She has organized many into photo albums, but she also had lots of framed photos lining her long L-shaped hallway. After decades of adding to the photos, the clutter finally got to her and she came up with a very creative and functional way to display all the photos of her kids and grandkids… Instead of hundreds of frames, she went and purchased a framed bulletin-board for each family–my kids, my brother’s kids, … Continue reading

Professional Photos or Candid Snapshots?

When my children were babies and preschoolers, I used to take them in for the “professional” photo sittings. I have some great photos of them in galvanized tubs and all dressed and scrubbed for “picture day”–but, I have to admit that my favorite photos are those candid ones taken on the spur of the moment: grubby camping kids, eating corn dogs at the county fair, splashing in the kiddy pool altogether in the back yard, holding up a slimy fish. While my stairway is lined with the school and “professional portraits”–the photos scattered all over my house are the candid … Continue reading
