Encouraging Young Photographers

I try my best to foster my child’s love of photography. Given that my grandfather was a professional photographer, who helped cultivate my passion for picture-taking, I feel responsible for encouraging my daughter’s interest. You never know how much a simple tip or a few words of encouragement can mean to a budding shutterbug. You can help your child learn the basics of photography by purchasing easy-to-read books designed for young shooters. In addition, consider giving your child the opportunity to experiment with your photo equipment (supervised, of course). The two of you could team up and shoot together. Give … Continue reading

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) held its 30th anniversary gala this past Saturday night at the Hollywood Palladium. The organization handed out Humanitarian Awards to Eli Roth, Olivia Munn, Dave Navarro, Joanna Krupa, Emily and Rose McCoy, Kellan Lutz, Charo, Lea Michele, Eva Mendes, and Anjelica Huston. Christina Cho was named the Nanci Alexander Award Winner and Dan Neri was named the Bea Arthur Activist Award Winner. Why I’m Shopping for More Pet Halloween Toys

I know in another blog I admitted that one way I could ease my worries about the economy and its affect on my pocketbook would be to cut out buying toys for my pets. But I had to make an exception for Halloween. See, a couple of weeks ago Murphy’s best friend Tucker came for a visit when his parents had to come through town on their annual trek to Indianapolis for the pet shoot they do up there every year. Since Murph’s down and out with his cast, he wasn’t able to play with Tucker. (Not because he didn’t … Continue reading

Appreciating Pet Photographers

I got the brilliant idea of a “family portrait” the other day — Moose, Lally, and I all in the same picture for once. (It’s rare that I can get that to happen.) Moose is the easy one. He’s pretty happy to lay there and pose for pictures without a problem for quite some time. All it takes is a little petting and you’ve got a Moose in place! I’m probably the second-easiest one out of the family trio. I’m not usually fond of pictures of myself, but I’m willing to pose and try not to blink. Lally is the … Continue reading

Win $300 in the Doctors Foster and Smith Pet Photo Contest

After I wrote the article about Grandma Dorothy’s top Doctors Foster and Smith cat catalog picks, I placed an order for some of her suggestions. (Specifically, the cat grass and the catnip bubbles, which I’ll be writing about in another article.) That’s when I noticed their pet photo contest. The Anniversary Photo Contest As part of their 25th Anniversary celebrations, Doctors Foster and Smith launched a pet photo contest. Each month they award 10 First Place, 10 Second Place, and 10 Third Place prizes to winners in 10 different categories. The neat thing about it is that all First, Second, … Continue reading

Hollywood Beauties Cruise Down the Red Carpet at Cannes

She’s not expecting twins, but when actress Michelle Williams made her debut on the red carpet at Cannes yesterday she drew as much attention as Hollywood’s most famous pregnant mom Angelina Jolie. Williams’ appearance at Cannes marked her first public interview since Heath Ledger’s death more than four months ago. The 27-year-old actress arrived in the south of France Thursday to walk the red carpet for the premiere of her new film “Wendy and Lucy.” She will reportedly remain at the world’s most famous film festival to promote “Synecdoche, New York,” a Charlie Kaufman film, in which she costars alongside … Continue reading

Celebrity Photographers: Jeff Bridges

Fans of actor Jeff Bridges are used to seeing him in front of the camera, but not very many know what a whiz he is behind the lens. If you don’t believe me, head to a local bookstore. That’s where I found a coffee table book filled with some of Bridges’ best still photographs. The book focuses on behind-the-scenes moments captured on film sets with co-stars such as Jane Fonda, Robin Williams and Michelle Pfeiffer. (By the way, after viewing the book I learned that the actor is donating profits from it to the Motion Picture and Television Fund, a … Continue reading

Pet Bereavement Photography

The other day my friend Karen and I had a chance to catch up. I asked her about recent jobs she and Michael have done (they’re pet photographers) and she shocked me by telling me they’d gone with another friend who was having her dog put to sleep to photograph that. Now, they were very close friends with this person and I can understand going for support, but to catch the moment on film? That really shook me up. I admitted as much. “I know it sounds a little weird, but Donna got the idea because they’ve done some infant … Continue reading

Pet Portraits by Michael: Chatting About Pet Photography

In Meet the Josephs I introduced you to some very dear friends of our entire family: Michael, Karen, and Tucker Joseph. (I should have used the above picture for that piece, but I didn’t have it yet. Oh well. Now you can see what the Josephs, not just Tucker, look like!) I thought it’d be fun to interview them about their business, and thankfully their schedule wasn’t as swamped as it usually is so they had a little time to humor me… Courtney Mroch: Say someone’s interested in getting a Pet Portrait by Michael. Describe how a shoot goes, what … Continue reading

Say “Cheese!” What to Do With That Perfect Pet Photo

Have you ever had this happen to you: You catch your dog (or cat or whatever kind of pet you might have) doing something too cute or funny or bizarre, so you grab your camera, snap a shot, and to your delight actually capture the moment perfectly on film? I know, it’s rare. (Well, at least for me it is.) I have yet to actually know such a triumph. However, I have had a few moments where I’ve managed to get a pretty cute or tender moment on film. So I do what any good parent does with such treasures: … Continue reading
