Anniversary Books

Whether you are celebrating your 5th, 10th, 20th or 50th wedding anniversary, the milestone deserves to be documented for prosperity. Fortunately, there are hundreds of anniversary-themed scrapbook items available to help you create a heartfelt album that can be viewed for years to come. Your job is simply to provide the photos and memorabilia. Obviously, if you have been married for 40 plus years, you will have undoubtedly accumulated more memories, and therefore, more “stuff” than a couple who is celebrating four years of wedded bliss. Still, when it comes to crafting anniversary scrapbooks, quality matters more than quantity. While … Continue reading

Faith Books

All hail! Summer! A time for sun, sand, surf… and church picnics. Our church’s annual summer picnic takes place in just a couple of weeks, and this year along with the games, food and music, the planning committee is also crafting a scrapbook featuring several major events, including Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Christmas and Easter celebrations. Religious-themed scrapbooks are nothing new; however, each year it seems there are more and more faith-related embellishments to choose from to make your memory book stand out. Of course, you don’t have to wait for the annual church picnic to assemble a faith … Continue reading

Unique Twists on Traditional Family Scrapbooks

Individuals of Japanese descent getting married in Hawaii have a tradition of folding 1001 origami cranes. The practice is called Sembazuru and the entire wedding party is supposed to help fold shiny pieces of paper, so the bride and groom can get to the lucky number. My entire family chipped in so that my fingers wouldn’t bleed folding 1001 cranes by myself. Once the cranes are assembled they are then arranged in the shape of a family crest. The massive design is then mounted, framed and displayed at the wedding reception, and later in the couple’s new home for continued … Continue reading

Photo Books: Pros and Cons

In creating photo books over the last couple of years, I’ve used several services (such as Snapfish and Shutterfly) to create and print. I’ll talk about each of these services and a couple of others in a later post, but for now, here are some of the pros and cons I have found with photo book services in general. Pros * When you’re done you have a nice compact book of your photos. * Most services that I’ve tried feature nice printing that lives up to expectations. * You can choose your size, cover, and layout to customize your book … Continue reading

Spring Outdoor Fun

Even if you don’t live near a National Park and can’t take advantage of the free admission this week, don’t let that stop you from soaking up the gorgeous spring weather. Now that warmer days are here there’s no excuse for you to stay cooped up inside. Grab the kids, ditch the winter gear and get moving in the great outdoors. Children especially love exploring nature; however, too much too soon can be a recipe for disaster. While you may be itching to trek the entire afternoon away, if your children are young and not used to hiking, don’t force … Continue reading

Ideas for Easter Scrapbook Layouts

Holidays are the fuel that drives most scrapbookers, though after a few years, these special layouts may get a bit stale. With Easter just around the corner, consider spicing up your holiday page designs with the following ideas: POEMS Easter lends itself to a variety of prose, from religious to whimsical. If you are creating a memory book dedicated solely to Easter, consider creating a couple of pages that highlight original or reproduced holiday-themed poems. You could opt to design a layout around a single Easter poem and embellish it with stickers and stamps or adhere a copy of the … Continue reading

Layouts with Love

With Valentine’s Day just a couple of days away, now is the time to start planning lovey-dovey page designs. Regardless of whom you select as your sweetheart this Love Day, your holiday layout should feature more than just a few photos and some paper hearts. An easy way to spice up your Valentine’s Day spread is to express your true love for your sweetheart with well-chosen words. If you don’t have a spouse, then turn your attention to your parents, children, siblings, or anyone who has touched your heart. If you struggle to express your feelings on paper, then turn … Continue reading

Job Titles From the Days of Your Ancestors

What did your ancestors do for a living? Times have probably changed quite a bit between now and and when your ancestors were alive. There are job titles that exist today that were never even dreamed of several generations ago. Conversely, there are some jobs that have ceased to exist. Genealogists spend a great deal of time digging into the past. This means there is a good chance that you will come across a word or two that you are unfamiliar with. Some of these words relate directly to the types of occupations that your ancestors held. If you cannot … Continue reading

Home Sources

Today I learned about sources of genealogical information that go beyond simple records of birth, marriage, death and the like. Commonly referred to as “home sources,” things like old photographs, military medals and other memorabilia can provide richness and depth to your family history in a way that the bare facts of a pedigree chart cannot. As a child I thought that it was kind of boring whenever someone would take out a book of old family photographs at a family gathering. Fast forward quite a few years and I love it when I’m at my parents’ house or Thanksgiving … Continue reading

Size Matters

When I first start shooting with my new digital camera I didn’t think twice about image size. Then, I tried to print dozens of digital images of my delicious baby daughter, and I realized that size matters. Image size is an important element in digital photography. Simply defined, image size is the measurement of your original digital photo file in pixels and DPI (Dots Per Inch). You might also see image size referred to as PPI (Pixels Per Inch). If you know what a pixel is, you will be better able to grasp the size concept. Pixels are the small … Continue reading
