Delightful Valentine’s Day Printables

I’ve discovered that Valentine’s Day is a great way to practice writing. So has my daughter, much to her chagrin, as she works on printing Valentines neatly. Neatness is not at the top of her priority list, but I’ve emphasized that people like to receive legible love notes. Picky, picky. If you’re creating some Valentine’s Day goodies and doing some covert printing practice too, you’ll love these Valentine’s Day printables! Of course, the ultimate Valentine’s Day printable is the card itself! There are many, many free cards on the internet, and you can also print out heart shapes by the … Continue reading

High-Tech Photo Tools

High-tech tools are making it harder and harder to miss photo opps. Today, you can find smartphones that are equipped with the same mechanics featured in upscale digital cameras. BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm Pre and HTC Touch, are just a few handheld gadgets that allow people to keep in touch with family and friends and shoot incredible photos at the same time. However, these high-tech devices aren’t the only inventions created to aid shutterbugs. Free photo organization and editing tools are also part of the package, including: Photo Session: Recently, Flickr unveiled a social image-sharing app called Photo Session. The app … Continue reading

Pro Photo Deals Too Good to Refuse

What’s that they say about sales that drive you to the poorhouse? For the past several weeks I’ve been seriously cutting back on household spending. And by cutting back I mean short of keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table, plus maintaining electricity and running water, I don’t dare open my wallet. I was holding steady to my strict financial plan until Sears Portrait Studio came calling. Actually, they emailed. For the past five years I’ve taken my daughter to Sears Portrait Studio to get annual portrait shots done. I then gift the professional photos to … Continue reading

Disney PhotoPass

It’s time for another edition of “What Is This Disney Feature?” In February I learned of all the many places money on a Disney gift card might be spent, but two of the names were unfamiliar. I’ve since examined Club Penguin, and today I’ll look at the second title I didn’t recognize: Disney PhotoPass. Disney’s all about creating lasting memories. That’s even the latest theme at the Disney parks. Because a primary way people make and preserve memories on vacations and throughout their lives is through photography, Disney decided to get in on the action. PhotoPass has existed for years … Continue reading

Write a Caption, Win a Signed Print

Political cartoons are a form of art. Good ones succinctly sum up complex news stories into something that is immediately understandable, at a glance. They are an excellent way to share one’s opinion about politicians, as well as politics in general. Write a caption for a political cartoon, and you could win a signed print of it, complete with your suggested caption. Most of the larger newspapers have a section that is devoted to political cartoons. You can count on at least a few of these cartoons to include a depiction of whomever the current President of the United States … Continue reading

Feedback on Photos

Earlier this year I entered an online photo contest. I didn’t win. No surprise there. I figured I didn’t have a chance in you-know-where of walking away with the grand prize (though the cash and new camera would have come in very handy). The real reason I entered the contest is because it offered a free review of your shot by a “photography expert.” I am always looking to improve my shots, so I jumped at the chance to have a professional review my work and offer some tangible advice. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the results of … Continue reading

The Leaping Sliding Sprinting Riding Science Book – Bobby Mercer

The Leaping Sliding Sprinting Riding Science Book by Bobby Mercer has 50 sports related science activities. Even kids who aren’t great at sports can use this book to have fun and learn at the same time. Considering that the Olympics are coming up, I’m sure there will be extra interest in sports in the next few months. Each of the activities has a list of equipment you need. Most of the activities use sports equipment such as footballs, stopwatches, skateboards, and bicycles, and they may need things like pencils, calculator or rulers. Each activitiy also has instructions, followed by a … Continue reading

Drawbacks of Digital Photo Frames

In a previous blog I discussed the latest report on Kodak’s EasyShare EX1011 digital photo frame. While some testers rated the device as one of the best on the market others pointed out some obvious drawbacks to this particular model. For example, while the frame has a built-in Wi-Fi transmitter to connect with your home wireless network, making it unnecessary to string a USB cord for access to photos from your PC (a definite pro) or the Kodak Gallery, you cannot access photos from other photo-sharing sites, such as Flickr. Another complaint lodged by testers, which is common among wireless-enabled … Continue reading
