Baby in a Frame

My daughter is five years old, but I still have a few framed shots of her as a newborn hanging around the house. Whenever I look at the professionally framed photos, I wonder if I should swap out the pictures and add updated ones. I have several current photos of my daughter displayed around our home, but none are a large as the ones taken while she was an infant. Part of me simply can’t justify taking down the baby pictures. After all, infants are notoriously challenging to score decent shots of, and the frame pictures I have of my … Continue reading

Photographing Baby: Close Up

Every moment of childhood would be wonderful to capture on film. That isn’t how life goes of course, and the opportunities to truly capture our children are not always made available. However, taking an up close and personal look, through the eyes of your camera (the lens) can capture much more than you realize. Often, when baby is being photographed, we stand to far away, getting clutter, and other background objects that we don’t need. They can be distracting. Instead, get close up. Even if your camera doesn’t have a zoom lens, you can still get close up to your … Continue reading

Preparation is Key

Regardless of whether you are photographing your favorite four-legged friend or you’re taking aim at your four kids, preparation is key to a successful shoot. Factors, such as lighting, background and camera angles should be considered before you start pressing the shutter button. Another factor to consider is attire. These days, outfit choice is an issue that is not exclusive to humans only. Dogs and cats have access to a variety of adorable ensembles, from sweaters to slickers, ponchos to pretty dresses. Whether you are taking a picture of your newborn or your fur baby, you want to select clothing … Continue reading

Taking Pictures with the Easter Bunny

So yesterday my 3-year-old daughter and I hopped down to the mall to visit Peter Cottontail. She was excited to tell the Easter Bunny what she wanted to find in her basket on Easter Sunday (that’s why he’s sitting in Santa’s chair isn’t it?) and I was thrilled to finally get a picture of my little one perched on Floppy’s lap. You see, my daughter has always been deathly afraid of any and all costumed characters. She has run screaming from Santa (multiple times); won’t go near Mickey, Minnie, any of the Care Bears, Dora, or Blue; heck, she even … Continue reading

Tales Of A Lazy Photographer… And Tips To Break The Habit

Scan your photo albums or the frames decorating your home and you will get a general idea of your picture taking habits. For example, the other day I was sorting photos and I noticed that I have an inordinate amount of vertical shots of my 3-year-old daughter. When she was a baby most, if not all, of the images I took of her were horizontal tummy shots. Now that she is a walking, talking… well, now, she’s more like a running blur, I tend to shoot vertically. Which is not to say that I don’t think about picture composition prior … Continue reading

Using Different Angles

The Rule Of Thirds is one of the most popular rules in photography. It is a great way to produce an eye-pleasing photo. Basically, you divide the frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically creating nine boxes. Many cameras offer a grid setting to help you accomplish this. You then place the important aspects of your subject along these lines or in the intersections where the lines meet. When photographing a subject with a great view in the background, placing your subject off center is a great way to capture it all. This is very useful when photographing the family … Continue reading
