Photographing Moms-to-be

When I was four months pregnant with my daughter my best friend demanded that I send her photos of my bulging belly. I reluctantly obliged. I don’t make a habit of posing with my hands on my bare stomach, and at four months along there wasn’t much to show. Still, at my friend’s insistence I kept documenting my ever expanding belly. I think the last shot took place about two weeks before I gave birth. Looking back now I am so glad that I have those photos. They aren’t the most attractive, but they document moments in time that are … Continue reading

Prepping for Your Baby Bump Shoot

The beginning of the new year is when many professional photographers offer super savings on portrait packages, including sessions for expectant mothers. Since most families take photos during the holidays, studios need to come up with deals to attract customers. If you are planning to give birth in the spring, now is one of the best times to take advantage of drastically reduced portrait packages. As I mentioned in a previous blog, photo sessions for expectant moms are extremely popular these days. However, in order to make the most of your shoot you’ll want to keep the following tips in … Continue reading

Baby Bump Photos

Michigan’s Lake Superior State University wants to eliminate the words “baby bump” from our lexicon. Today, the school released its annual “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.” In addition to “baby bump,” the words “occupy,” “ginormous,” “man cave” and “the new normal” have been voted on to be dropped from our daily vocabulary. Fat chance of that happening, especially if you are expecting a baby in the next few months. The New Year typically brings with it a slew of deals on maternity photo packages. The deals offered by professional photographers are … Continue reading

Choo-Choo Scrapbook

Instead of celebrating the season with a monster Christmas party, this year my daughter’s school is hosting a Polar Express-themed winter shindig. The teachers are planning a series of activities and events, which feature lessons on trains, the spirit of giving and other topics covered in the classic children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. With all of the hard work going into designing the massive soiree, naturally, the school wants to document the event from beginning to end. That’s where I come in. Last week I found myself agreeing to join the scrapbook committee. A bunch of moms will be … Continue reading

Do You Support the Ban on Birth Photos?

How old was your child when you took his very first photo? These days most kids have their mugs snapped within seconds of entering into the world thanks to the prevalence of cameras in the delivery room. In fact, it’s not unusual for a newborn to be met with a paparazzi of family and friends snapping photos like there’s no tomorrow. While there has yet to be an incident where an infant has been blinded by flashbulbs, a Maryland hospital is not taking any chances, and recently imposed a ban on still and video cameras during childbirth. Meritus Medical Center … Continue reading

Spicing Up Pregnancy Shots

The key to shooting stellar pregnancy shots is preparation. As I mentioned in a previous blog, your goal is to make your expectant subject as comfortable as possible. To do so, consider having a face-to-face or phone meeting prior to the shoot. The discussion is meant to prepare your subject for what’s ahead. For example, you might suggest that the mom-to-be not wear tight fitting clothing or pants with elastic waists, which can leave impressions on her skin. This is especially important if your subject is requesting semi-nude photos or pictures of her bare belly. Other tips to recommend to … Continue reading

Focus on Fun

Summer is primetime for outdoor fun. If you have kids, then the sunny season is also a super time to capture your kids at their funniest while participating in outdoor activities. Often, parent photographers get caught up in trying to capture the perfect picture of their kids striking just the right pose. Moms and dads with cameras are often guilty of forcing their mini models to break out their pearly whites and flash just the right smile before hitting the shutter button. My suggestion: Forget about forcing children to smile. Instead, find something that they think is fun, then start … Continue reading

Smile!

I read this tweet the other day and couldn’t stop laughing: “Had an argument with my 7yo today and she threatened to film me with the flip camera and put it on YouTube. And she totally would.” Thankfully, my 5-year-old is still figuring out how to manipulate her Fisher-Price digital camera, so any potential photographic evidence she plans to use against me is currently relegated to still images only. Be that as it may, her photo experiments have already been the subject of raised eyebrows, concerned stares, and whispers between teachers at her school, all thanks to her voyeuristic, stalker … Continue reading

Taking Pictures with the Easter Bunny

So yesterday my 3-year-old daughter and I hopped down to the mall to visit Peter Cottontail. She was excited to tell the Easter Bunny what she wanted to find in her basket on Easter Sunday (that’s why he’s sitting in Santa’s chair isn’t it?) and I was thrilled to finally get a picture of my little one perched on Floppy’s lap. You see, my daughter has always been deathly afraid of any and all costumed characters. She has run screaming from Santa (multiple times); won’t go near Mickey, Minnie, any of the Care Bears, Dora, or Blue; heck, she even … Continue reading
