Amusement Parks

We recently took our son to an amusement park. This was part of a dream my father had of having his two grandson’s at the park together (along with their parents). This would put the whole family in one place at one time. The amusement park would also provide a child-centered event where the kids could spend time together, see some new sights, and have all of the attention on them. I later learned that there were other reasons to have the whole family there. Unfortunately this was not possible. An illness prevented my nephew from attending. Since we had … Continue reading

Snapping Keepers at the Amusement Park

I’ve been to my share of amusement parks in the last three decades, but for some reason I never thought to bring along a camera (even to Disneyland)… until I became a parent. It may have taken me a while to discover how photo-friendly theme parks are, but I made up for lost time in the last few weeks. This summer I’ve snapped more than 300 photos of my daughter having a ball at Six Flags Great America and several other local amusement parks. Why it took me until I had a child of my own to realize that a … Continue reading

Get Your Wiggle on at Six Flags

My preschool daughter has never been a huge Wiggles fan. What’s more, she screams like a banchee every time I try to put her on an amusement park ride. And I’m not talking about those baby roller coasters that travel on a flat track, or those crazy toddler swings that spin around with modified reckless abandon. For the past three years my child has unleashed glass shattering, ear splitting, high-pitched shrieks each time I’ve tried to place her on merry-go-round horses (the paralyzed ones that don’t move up and down), baby boats (that barely move in a pool no bigger … Continue reading

Making Time for Family

Being a busy single parent it is difficult to find the time to do the things that you want to do. It seems like most days fly right by because you are so extra busy. With the summer months fast approaching plan some special weekends when you feel that you can let some of your responsibilities take the back seat in order to put your family first. Plan to take 2 to 3 days during the month … Continue reading

Birthday Pictures: What to Know Before They Blow

My daughter’s last birthday was one to remember. We celebrated with dozens of family members and friends at my parent’s home in Hawaii and appropriately enough my daughter chose a “Lilo & Stitch” theme for her party. By the end of the night I had snapped more than 200 pictures (I know… snap happy parents unite) and once I had a chance to view the images, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out—-especially the ones that featured her blowing out her birthday candles. If you are the parent of the birthday child you know how chaotic it … Continue reading
