Photography Week in Review for January 21, 2007-January 27, 2008

How many times have you thumbed through a camera manual and wondered what the letters RAW, NEF, TIFF and JPEG stood for? And how many times have you returned from vacation with more shots that needed to be deleted from your digital camera than ones that you considered framing? Finally, when was the last time you seriously evaluated your work in an effort to improve your shots? These are just a few of the topics I discussed in the Photography Blog this past week. Each post includes tips and answers to some of the most commonly asked questions involving the … Continue reading

Photography Terms You Should Know

This blog is a long time coming. If I was ultra-organized I would have posted it months ago when I first started contributing to the Photography Blog. Better late than never, I suppose. The following list contains the most commonly used digital photography terms. While it doesn’t include every single word or term used in the field, it does provide enough information to help you navigate your way through a camera manual and it will allow you to meet with a camera salesperson without wondering if he or she is speaking English. Aperture—-The opening behind the camera’s lens that permits … Continue reading

Finally the photograph blog is seeing a bit of action. With your help, it could see a lot more! I’d love to know what you all would like to see in here, what types of articles would be helpful, and what techniques, features or other items you need help with. In the meantime, check out what has been happening in the Photography Blog for the past week. The New Digital Camera Quest I am in the market for a new camera. Why? Just because I love photography so much that I want a digital SLR really, really bad. The extension … Continue reading

Photography Glossary- Q through Z

Tah-dah! The end….we’re finally here. Today we’ll finish up with photography terms from Q to Z. Obviously these are not ALL of the terms out there. That would take up far too much room! I have just picked out the more important terms. Quartz Date-Digital clock that can print the date and/or time on the film or between frames. RAW- This is a file format, it isn’t really an acronym for anything. It is basically unprocessed data, and are often known as digital negatives. Resolution- The ability of the camera to detect and distinguish fine details. Rule of Thirds- This … Continue reading

Understanding Manual Exposure Part II

When you are exposing your image manually, you must make your shutter speed, aperture and ISO work together. Usually you will choose your shutter speed or aperture first, based on the situation. For a portrait, for example, you might determine that you want a large aperture so that you can blur the background. You would choose a large aperture and then you would adjust your shutter speed to match that setting. The larger your aperture, the faster your shutter speed should be (most of the time). In well lit situations, you will never need to mess with your ISO. You … Continue reading

Why I Like to Shoot in the RAW

I use a DSLR camera, which I love for many reasons. I love how much I can customize the settings, compared to a point and shoot. I love throwing backgrounds into a pretty blur when I’m shooting portraits. Recently, I have delved into the world of shooting in RAW (instead of JPG) and I am really excited about what it has done for my photography. A RAW image is just what it sounds like: a raw photo. It has not been processed and compressed by the camera, as are JPG files. When you use a point and shoot digital camera, … Continue reading

Halloween Candy Competition Among Parents

There’s one in every neighborhood—-the home where you know you can score a king-size candy bar on Halloween as opposed to those tiny fun-size bars (which are really not all that “fun” unless you can cram 10 in your mouth at one time). King-size candy bars came courtesy of the Duerr family in my neighborhood. They had five kids, which explains a lot in terms of their generosity (with that many kids they were used to hosting half the neighborhood on a daily basis) and their choice of premium chocolate (one Halloween they handed out regular-size bars of Ghirardelli Chocolate … Continue reading

Megapixels and Picture Quality

Ultra-thin, point and shoot digital cameras are all the rage among young photographers (not so much with me). I always figured the people who opted for these slim-Jim cameras were more concerned with style and size than with picture quality. However, these days ultra-thin models are packing more megapixel capacity than ever before. So how much do you really know about megapixels? Or perhaps the better question is, how much do you really need to know? If you are in the process of purchasing your first digital camera one of the first steps to understanding what kind of camera is … Continue reading
