Understanding Light

One of the trickiest aspects of photography is lighting. Balancing natural light sources with artificial ones can be a real challenge for beginner shutterbugs, especially if they rely on their bare eyes to white balance. Regardless of how fancy your camera, there’s no replicating the human eye when it comes to color conversion. Subtle shifts in color go largely unnoticed by cameras, especially in low-light situations. You can see this quite clearly if you snap a few photos in a dimly lit room. Whereas a camera may see the dim artificial light as white, our eyes may read it as … Continue reading

Pictures and Color Temperature

When avid photographers hear the term “color temperature” most think of White Balance. When I was working in TV, white balance was a critical factor in daily shooting and is the reason you see some interview subjects holding up a white piece of paper in front of TV cameras prior to the start of a press conference or other major media event. White Balance essentially measures the color temperature of a photo and on most digital cameras there is some function that allows you to control the White Balance in your shot. While most people simply employ the Auto White … Continue reading

Your Camera and the Elements

Parts of our state just received more than 15 inches of snow today. It’s a far cry from the 85-degree sunny, beautiful days we experienced while on vacation in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago. Luckily, my camera has endured the weather changes like a champ. (In fact, it has probably adjusted better than my body.) Hot, cold, snow, rain… whatever Mother Nature is doling out should never prevent you from capturing images with your camera (digital or otherwise). However, if you plan to venture out into the elements it is a good idea to take extra measures to protect … Continue reading

Keeping Kids Busy Indoors

It has been breathtakingly cold outside this year. This year we have hit record low temperatures here in Utah, in fact, we had our first experience with freezing rain this week. These below freezing temperatures have got the kids cooped up inside all day, every day, and if they’re anything like mine, they’re starting to get a bad case of cabin fever! But don’t worry, we’re here to save the day, because we have lots of ideas to keep kids happy indoors and out! Something Logan and I have decided to do this year is to make a list of … Continue reading

Photos in Bloom

Despite this week’s wicked winds and freezing cold temperatures, we’ve experienced a very mild autumn. When you live in northern Wisconsin you never take for granted a rare 12-day stretch of 80 degree days in late September/early October. As a result of the unseasonably high temperatures many of the flowers that frame our home are still in bloom. We’ve only had one night that dipped below freezing, so many of the blossoms are still sturdy and bright. The unusual occurrence has inspired me to get outside to document the pretty sights. While my photo specialty is not floral and fauna, … Continue reading

Mother-Daughter Holiday Bonding

My daughter is just six years old, but she’s already got eye-rolling down to a science. I know this because I am typically the one she practices on. Only in her mind she’s not practicing, she’s dying–a little bit inside–each time I embarrass her by, well, being her mom. I do things like remind her to put on her hat when I drop her off at school in the dead of winter (eye roll), tell her that she is not allowed to play unless she cleans up her room (double eye roll), and sing songs from the radio during carpool … Continue reading

Christmas Camera Shopping

If you are asking Santa for a new camera this Christmas, then make sure to list the best of the best. While most point-and-shoot owners are eyeing pimped-out DSLRs, there are a few water sports lovers (like me), who are hoping St. Nick brings them an Olympus waterproof camera. Olympus is one of the most reputable names in the world of photography and is known for its outstanding line of waterproof cameras. Its current waterproof Stylus series offers more innovative features than many of its competitors and leads the market in sales. Some of the most popular models include: Stylus … Continue reading

Create a Fun, Fall Scrapbook

Fall is just officially a few days away, although here in Wisconsin it already feels like fall. I have to say that this is my favorite season. I love the cooler temperatures, when the leaves begin to change colors, drinking hot cocoa and making homemade soups. There is just something cozy about this time of year. What better way to capture the joy of fall than to create a fun, fall scrapbook. A fall scrapbook is a wonderful way to personalize what this season means to you. To create a fall scrapbook you may need to start planning pictures that … Continue reading

Camera Delays

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you are ready to take that perfect action shot, but you keep missing it? You push the button to take the photo, but your camera doesn’t seem to be responsive enough. While this can be frustrating, there are ways around your camera’s delay. Most of the time, the camera’s delay is caused by a setting or command you don’t realize you’re telling it to perform. You can get the photos you want by anticipating and preparing for the delays your camera needs. One reason your camera may be delaying taking the shot is because … Continue reading

Follow the Trail

The vibrant palette of gorgeous fall colors means one thing… winter is on its way. Don’t let autumn’s mild temperatures and beautiful scenery go to waste. Instead of sweating it out on the stationary bike at your gym this weekend consider hitting the trails and soaking up the sights and sounds of the season. The following routes are highly promoted by tourism bureaus in the hopes of getting nature lovers to visit off-the-beaten-path spots. Each boasts stunning views of fall foliage. What’s more, these hikes won’t break the bank. Free maps and other complimentary interpretive material show off the best … Continue reading
