Snapping Sporting Events

March Madness is in full effect, and people around the world are hoping their favorite NCAA teams make it to the Final Four in Houston. If you are lucky (or rich) enough to score tickets to the Big Dance, then you may have a shot at documenting the action on the hardwood with your own camera. The NCAA allows still photos to be taken during its games, but not video, unless you have proper media credentials. However, this liberal rule is not applied at every sporting venue. Teams and stadiums have the right to impose restrictions on photography to accommodate … Continue reading

Snapping Frameworthy Shots Of Your Kids

We have been experiencing record high temperatures in our neck of the woods. Last week we were back in the 80s—-that’s 20 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. Naturally, this led to all kinds of excitement around our home. My daughter and I spent the majority of the week outdoors. We grabbed our kites and headed to the park where I was able to capture more “summertime” magic on film. I love taking shot of my daughter at play, especially when she’s outdoors. Believe me; it’s much easier trying to get candid shots of 3-year-olds when they … Continue reading

Shooting Indoors

I am sick of winter. And I know I am not the only one who feels that way. Sure, I spent the holidays in Hawaii with my family, but that getaway only made it harder for me to deal with the constant snow and cold that has made Wisconsin its haven for the past four months. Don’t get me wrong; I made the most of the pretty winter landscapes by snapping them with my new digital camera. However, one can only take so many snow shots. These days most of my seasonal shooting is done indoors at my daughter’s sporting … Continue reading

Going Pro

My grandfather was a professional photographer. He worked extremely hard fine-tuning his craft and took great care to ensure that his clients were satisfied with their images. I remember how lovingly he spoke of his passion for photography and his decision to go pro. My grandfather was very talented and his desire to turn his passion into profit was one that didn’t come without challenges. However, he persevered and for decades he captured special moments in time that live in infamy. So, how does one know when it’s the right time to advance from shooting as a hobby to taking … Continue reading

Getting Ready to Shoot the Fourth

It doesn’t get more American than a Fourth of July BBQ with friends, family and fireworks. The ultimate summertime holiday is teeming with amazing photo ops from flags to family reunions, parades to pie eating contests. It would be a shame not to make the most of these Independence Day events. So grab your camera, charge up those batteries, go out and splurge on a new memory card (or extra rolls of film) and get ready to snap your loved ones in action as they proudly celebrate our country’s 232nd birthday. Fourth of July Parade I addressed the challenges involved … Continue reading

Improving Your Autumn Photographs

Weeks ago my daughter’s playgroup set aside the first Tuesday in October to visit a local pumpkin patch. We figured we’d get an early start and go before the school groups descended and the patch was thoroughly picked over. Little did we know that Tuesday would be one of the hottest October days on record. Our little pumpkins were picking pumpkins in 85-degree heat. (In Wisconsin that’s virtually unheard of.) Which means I have pictures of my daughter and her friends in shorts and t-shirts covered with sweat. Not exactly my idea of the perfect autumn picture. For photographers who … Continue reading
