How to Prepare for Picture Day

Having your baby’s portraits done is a fun experience, but it can also be stressful if you are worried about how the session will go. Babies don’t know it’s picture day, so nothing is going to stop them from being cranky, spitting up on their brand new outfit, or crying during the entire shoot. There are some things you can do to help things go smoothly, however. Here are some tips for getting ready for your baby’s picture day. 1. Try to schedule the portrait session for your baby’s awake times. In the morning, right after she wakes up, or … Continue reading

Choosing Photos for a Birth Announcement

If you were going to send out a wedding announcement, you certainly wouldn’t take your engagement photos right after rolling out of bed or when you’re suffering from a newly developed rash. You’d get ready, making sure to show your best side, right? Why wouldn’t you do the same thing for a baby announcement? Many parents are eager to send off baby announcements full of photos of their new little cutie as soon as they get out of the hospital. The long wait is over, you’re excited and overjoyed at the new little life you’re holding in your arms, and, … Continue reading

Baby’s First Photo Shoot

As I’m about to have my first baby, I keep thinking about her first photo shoot and I’ve realized I have several questions to answer before she’s ready for her debut. You may want to consider these questions as well before scheduling or taking baby’s first photo shoot. First off, what are you going to use the photos for? Are you looking for a big print to hang on your wall, or are you shooting for lots of little prints you can hand out to everyone you know? Or in this digital age, you may be simply planning on putting … Continue reading

Tips for Taking that Perfect Photo: Art of Distraction

This week I’m talking about baby portraits. Is there anything more precious than great photos of your baby? Since babies grow, develop and change so rapidly, a digital camera is almost as important as the diapers you burn through each day. I’ve given you advice about Timing, Lighting, and Props. Today I’m going to teach you how to get your baby to not only look at the camera, but smile, too! It’s all about distraction, and it’s definitely an art. Nobody does it better than mom, which is why I’m such a huge advocate for taking baby’s portraits yourself! Figure … Continue reading

Tips for Taking that Perfect Photo: Timing

One of my proudest moments as a mom is when I capture my son in a photograph in just the right way: it’s focused, he’s smiling, and everything about the picture is adorable. I can’t get them on Facebook fast enough for all my friends and family to oohh-and-aahh over. A few of my friends have asked me how I get such good pictures of my son. Part of it is technique and part of it is the fact that he is just plain cute. Obviously I am a little biased because I’m his mom! I’m going to share with … Continue reading

The Start of Smiles

After over 30 days of horrendous crying, or (more pleasantly) a furrowed brow and a look of confusion or dissatisfaction only being quelled by breastfeeding, my son smiled at me this week. It was quite intentional as I sat that wonderful morning in my office chair, in front of the glowing ambiance of computer screens signaling the near and inevitable dawn. It was in this modest location, on a day like any other, that my son smiled at me. My wife doesn’t believe it but it truly did happen. He was, perhaps, a bit groggy from his recent pre-dawn feeding … Continue reading

Photo Slide Show – He Sat Down to Watch!

A couple weeks ago I finished creating the photo DVD slideshow of my husband’s photos from birth to graduation and I must admit it is awesome. I had spent the day before scanning 120 photographs of my husband. He wanted to pick out the music for the video so I had to wait a day on him to get it to me. I picked four Mercy Me songs which were very appropriate for my husband. The DVD was actually a late Christmas gift for his mother. Of course I was dying to show my husband and son the video as … Continue reading

Family Photos: Posed or Natural?

Many times when we attempt to take a photograph of our children or the whole family, we stage the photo. We want everyone to strike the perfect pose, get in just the right position, and give us a perfect smile. Sometimes posed photographs turn out nice. Other times, not so much. Personally, I’ve found that the best way to make a staged photo work is to make everyone laugh just before you snap the picture. Calling out something silly like, “Everybody say Krabby Patties!” usually works on the little ones. Whatever it takes. If you get everybody to laugh then … Continue reading
