Taking Pictures of Difficult Times

We don’t think much when taking pictures of our children for celebrations, vacations, or just because they are acting silly. Sometimes we take pictures of our children when they aren’t doing anything exciting but it’s a moment we want to capture because it’s still special to us. What about taking pictures of your child during those times you might find questionable. My youngest son is in the 5th grade. When he was in 3rd grade he had surgery on his collarbone. He was born with a non-union collarbone which basically means it didn’t connect all the way across. So they … Continue reading

6 Tips for Great Pictures

We all WANT to take great pictures, but let’s face it, not everyone knows how. Some people are downright intimidated by cameras. They do seem rather complicated at first, don’t they? EVERYONE can take great photos. It doesn’t take a super charged top of the line all the bells and whistles camera to do it either. The key to taking great photos is composition, first and foremost, at least that’s my opinion. So you see a great photo. You know it’s a great photo. But do you know WHY it’s a great photo? Well, that’s kind of relative. In my … Continue reading

The Whiteboards

A pair of white surfaces that erase easily and can temporarily hold some form of analogue data for a period of time. Simple enough. They are reusable and don’t take up more space than they already do. The information they hold can be likened to the days in grade school figuring out a math problem (long division like) on a piece of paper with a trusty #2 pencil. Or, a more likely scenario for those who read these posts, a small surface on the outside of your dorm room door where people leave notes, draw inappropriate pictures, or “accidentally” use … Continue reading

Disney Tickets Together on Facebook

Everything goes through Facebook these days. Companies use it to network, advertising agencies promote their wares, and people play games and scroll through pictures of their friends. With everything attached to Facebook now, it’s hard to remember the early days of the site, back when it was only designed for students. Those days are long past, and now Facebook routinely performs one of its primary services as a marketing tool. Companies create pages for their products of which people can become fans; sometimes agencies also put together groups where fans come together and discuss their favorite show, clothing line, etc. … Continue reading

Photo Communication

I found my love of photography in a visual communication class that helped me make sense of why and how certain images stood out in my mind. A single image can be like an article or short story; it’s just read in a slightly different way. In understanding that communication, I believe that you can take what you learn to improve your own photography immensely. One of the assignments in that class was to pick a photo that communicated something to you and write a 10-page paper on it. Ten pages? On one image? Yes. And it ended up being … Continue reading

Is Your Daughter Afraid of Spiders?

The word “scared” doesn’t even come close to describing my preschool daughter’s fear of spiders. “Petrified,” “terror-stricken,” and “alarmed” don’t do her anxiety justice either. It’s nearly impossible to describe in a single word what happens when my otherwise fearless daughter catches sight of eight long black legs scuttling across the floor. Simply put, she freaks out. She screams as though someone was ripping out her hair with his or her bare hands. She can’t (or won’t) run away because she is paralyzed with fear, and she has a hard time uttering anything more than “sp-sp-sp-sp-iiiiiiiiiiiii-DER!” in between huge gasps … Continue reading

Capturing Constellations

Have you ever stepped outside on a crystal clear night and wished you could capture the moon and the stars with your own camera? It’s not as difficult to accomplish as you might think. Continuing my series on astrophotography, now that you know what type of camera you should be using let’s discuss the best ways to capture constellations. TRIPOD Unless you are part rock and can steady your hands during your entire shoot I would highly suggest placing your camera on a tripod. Once you have your camera attached properly you can begin taking exposures of 10 to 25 … Continue reading

Photo Tips: Mastering Close Ups and Making Eye Contact

Think about it. What is the single most popular photo subject shot by the average photographer? If you answered people, you’re right. The main reason most of us purchase a camera is to photograph people. Even if you don’t have children of your own your images likely include other family members, friends, or strangers you come across at the park or on your vacation. It could be the fisherman pulling in that 115-pound marlin off the coast of Mexico or the juggler on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. Regardless, photographing people comes with unique challenges. The following are two skills … Continue reading
