Choosing Wisely for the Thanksgiving Meal

Some food costs more than others. Here is how to make the best selections for your budget and still be true to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. On Thanksgiving, we tend to go a bit overboard. I know this because the number of leftovers seems to grow exponentially over the years. Everyone has their favorite dishes, and all of them need to be prepared. Why have pumpkin pie when you can have pumpkin pie, apple pie, cheesecake, cookies and a cherry cobbler. Well, I’ll tell you why. All of that food can add up, and expensive ingredients mean expensive dishes. This … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Picture Cake

This photo project is a variation on a creation one of our playgroup moms made for her son’s birthday. The original project called for a cake to be decorated as a football field. The “players,” which top the cake, are made from photographs taken at the party. I tweaked the theme a bit and plan to bring this turkey inspired cake to our playgroup’s pre-Thanksgiving Day party next Tuesday. Here’s what you’ll need: · Sheet cake (you can bake one or by a standard sized one from your local supermarket or bakery) · Brown construction paper · Photos of each … Continue reading

Fun and Easy Ways to Go Green

Earth Day 2013 is less than a week away.  How are you planning to celebrate? Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of green to go green.  All you need is a little time and some motivation to recycle what you already own.  By repurposing materials you would otherwise toss in the trash, you are not only saving money and showing your kids simple ways to save the planet, but you’re also giving them an outlet to showcase their creative energy. Placemats:  Rather than spend cash on everyday placemats, consider making your own with poster board, old magazines and … Continue reading

Turkey Day Drama This Year?

It is almost Thanksgiving and I am getting ready to for our annual guilt trip by my in laws. Every year around the holidays this happens when they know we like to do Thanksgiving at our house and his mother says that she understands. Even though she says she understands and is not upset we always seem to get the guilt trip. OK to be honest it is not me that gets the guilt trip because honestly it does not bother me enough anymore to feel guilty but my husband he still gets the guilt trip. I am sure that … Continue reading

Frozen Desserts Galore: Pumpkin Baked Alaska

It’s too bad that I didn’t find this recipe while I was doing my “Abandon the Pumpkin Pie” series. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to try this out. The cool richness of pumpkin flavored frozen ice cream will satiate any post Turkey day (or is it pre-Turkey day now?) cravings you might have. Baked Alaska is actually kind of fun to make. If you’re looking for something to do with the kids, this is a great science experiment. (You’ll have to pardon the homeschooler that comes out in me every once in awhile.) It is a perfect … Continue reading

Winners of the Caldecott Medal: 1953-1957

Come admire the glorious books that were brilliant enough to win the prestigious Caldecott Medal! I do not know a lot about art, so I am giving a brief synopsis of each book along with a comment about the artwork here and there. I am also including lists of the Honor winners for each year. I hope you enjoy my series. Feel free to leave comments! 1953 “The Biggest Bear” by Lynd Ward “Better a bear in the orchard than an Orchard in the bear,” Johnny Orchard’s grandfather always said. Johnny was always embarrassed because other people in the valley … Continue reading
