The Official Bloggers of RootsTech 2012

Are you unable to attend RootsTech this year? It is the biggest genealogy conference of the year, and there will be some genealogists who really wanted to go but could not travel to Utah due to work, finances, or health issues. Those of you at home can follow along by paying attention to some of the Official Bloggers of RootsTech 2012. What does it mean to have been designated an Official Blogger of RootsTech 2012? As far as I can tell, this is something that is considered to be an honor. These bloggers will be attending RootsTech 2012, which means … Continue reading

Photo Love

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, which is why I made a beeline to Target to purchase a bunch of their special Love Day picture frames. Every February the discount retailer stocks super cute Valentine’s Day frames and sells them for less than five bucks each. This year the selection includes a “Puppy Love” frame complete with a smiling bulldog, a colorful “Hearts a Plenty” version, and a wide array of red, white, and pink hued picture holders with a host of different patterns from stripes to polka dots. I plan to fill the frames with photos of my … Continue reading

How to Make a Unique Photo Collage

I love making photo collages. Recently I have started creating a different kind of collage: one that looks like a single photo. It is a really neat effect that requires a little preparation, a lot of patience and some Photoshop skills, but it is worth it. I am going to use a photo I took for a recent engagement session to show you the end result. The first thing I do is find my location for the picture. I look for a spot that has visual interest and plenty of areas to pose my subjects. The next step is to … Continue reading

Photo Books: An Introduction

There’s something really appealing to me about a professionally bound book containing my own photos, text, and graphics. Perhaps it’s the writer and wanna-be designer in me that loves seeing all my work printed and presented beautifully for others to see. These are just a couple of reasons I love the printed photo books that are becoming so popular these days. I did my first photo book a couple of years ago right before getting married. I wanted to show off many of the engagement photos we’d had taken, but didn’t want to have them in a traditional album or … Continue reading

Choosing a Great Wedding Photographer

I’ve heard over and over that one of the most important things you choose when getting married (other than your spouse) is your photographer. I’ve talked to people who have loved their wedding photos, and those who nearly cry every time they see them because they hate them so badly. I don’t think anyone wants to be in that last boat. Even when the photos turn out well, you may experience frustration with the photographer’s schedule, policies, or other quirks. There’s a lot to think about before your big day. So when you’re choosing your photographer, here are a few … Continue reading

Choosing Photos for a Birth Announcement

If you were going to send out a wedding announcement, you certainly wouldn’t take your engagement photos right after rolling out of bed or when you’re suffering from a newly developed rash. You’d get ready, making sure to show your best side, right? Why wouldn’t you do the same thing for a baby announcement? Many parents are eager to send off baby announcements full of photos of their new little cutie as soon as they get out of the hospital. The long wait is over, you’re excited and overjoyed at the new little life you’re holding in your arms, and, … Continue reading

Clay Aiken Blogs, Patrick Swayze Experiences a “Miracle,” and Amy Adams is Engaged

He is almost a dad himself, but Clay Aiken is blogging about a recent UNICEF trip he took to Somalia and Kenya. He talks about how the violence in each country has left thousands of children homeless. Even as things are looking better, many children have not returned to school. Aiken wrote, “Getting children back to school is vital for their protection, and helps build a sense of normalcy in their lives. The re-establishment of schools in the most difficult circumstances is a testament to the commitment of UNICEF and to Kenyans.” He went on to say that every child … Continue reading

Mariah Carey’s Engagement Ring is Bigger Than Carmen Electra’s

And there’s a reason for that… I’ll explain in a bit, but first I should note that Mariah Carey has yet to officially confirm that the gigantumongous rock on her left ring finger is in fact an engagement ring. It is. However, the pop diva did confirm that the ring was a gift from her “good friend” (see: fiancé) Nick Cannon. The pair was snapped snuggling up to each at the afterparty for her new film, Tennessee, on Saturday night. The cuddlefest reportedly started earlier that night at the Tribeca Film Festival where the world got a look at the … Continue reading

The Search for the Perfect Engagement Ring

I’ll never forget going to pick out my engagement ring with Wayne. Neither of us really knew what we were doing, but I have to give Wayne credit. He actually researched what the “Four C’s” was all about so he could talk the diamond lingo. I, on the other hand, was clueless. Carats? Clarity? Color? What the heck was that all about? Just pick a pretty ring and be done with it. The saleslady brought out all kinds of settings for us to choose from. I picked all the modest diamonds. Basically they weren’t much more than chips. Wayne kept … Continue reading

Photography Potpourri—-Wedding Picture Reunion

I’ve written a series of blogs on wedding photography, which included a variety of sub-topics from what qualities you should look for in a wedding photographer to how much you should expect to pay for memorable shots. But, what about those couples that can’t afford to shell out big bucks for a photo album filled with prize-winning wedding pictures? An Ohio couple marking their 27th anniversary has an answer you may find hard to believe. Karen Cline married the love of her life in 1980. Back then she and her beloved were teenagers with very little money. Cline was 18 … Continue reading
