Homeschool Pinning

Do you pin?  I have to say that Pinterest is my favorite social media outlet.  I am a visual person so seeing all those images captivates me.  I love creating boards for things I want to create or pretend to create.  I had promised myself that I would make one thing a week, either a meal or a craft, based on my Pinterest inspirations.  I have not done this successfully every week but I have a few times a month. One of my favorite things to search on Pinterest is homeschooling ideas from curriculum reviews to arts and crafts.  Here … Continue reading

The Internet and Homeschooling, part 2

Homeschool parents are finding ways to use the internet to enhance the schooling aspect of homeschooling. The mystery of lesson planning is solved by a quick search. Frugal homeschoolers can save their budget with free printables and unit studies ready to download. Students who bore easily with textbooks can take a break playing online educational games. YouTube helps many frustrated students who need tutoring in just about any subject. Adventurous homeschoolers can be whisked away on virtual field trips. Many art museums, zoos, and historical locations offer an online peek children will enjoy. Consider looking up a country you are … Continue reading

Do You Blog About Your Homeschool?

Do you have a blog? And if so, do you blog about your homeschool? When you go online and type “homeschool blogs” into a web search, you have a wealth of information at your fingertips. Just a quick search in Google yielded me 4,110,000 results – wow. Think of all the resources those four million blogs could hold for me. Think of all the inspiration, the lesson ideas, the motivation I could get by tapping into that completely free resource. With all those blogs already in existence, is it still important for you to add the topic to your blog … Continue reading

Old School Scrapping

Ever since she saw The Smurfs in 3D this summer, my young daughter has been begging to view old school cartoons. My brother (bless him) has been busy sending her DVDS of the Snorks, Super Friends (hello Justice League of America!) and Heathcliff. I wanted to create a scrapbook layout documenting my daughter’s new obsession, but I can’t find anything more than sparse clip art featuring most of her new video friends. When I told my mom that I wanted to make an “old school” page design she suggested I draw pictures of the Snorks on cardstock, sand the finished … Continue reading

Frugal St. Patrick’s Day Fun

My 6-year-old is down to party anytime, anywhere, for any reason. Fortunately, I don’t have to hire caterers, a band and petting zoo animals for her to have a good time. As long as the celebration involves balloons and cake, she’s good to go. Fortunately, I have those items and a few more inexpensive goodies to make our St. Patrick’s Day party a fun and frugal affair. Given that March 17th isn’t a major holiday in the United States, the celebration doesn’t have to be complicated, fussy or extravagant. However, since we are Irish, we certainly can’t let the day … Continue reading

Taking a Picture of a Picture

Kids these days have it so easy. My young daughter rolls her eyes when I remind her of that fact. Of course, I did the same thing when my dad took strolls down memory lane and regaled us with stories about having to walk home from school uphill both ways. Still, the perpetual hill has nothing on today’s computers. Advancements in technology have simplified just about every aspect of life, including photography. I thought about this the other day when I was taking screen shots of webpages. No longer does one have to possess a fancy camera and mad photo … Continue reading

Taking Pictures at Target

Did you know that Target has an in-house portrait studio? Apparently, I don’t get out much. Actually, I blame my location. Target portrait studios exist, but only in select stores. I stumbled upon one while visiting a friend who lives just outside of a major metropolitan area, and I was quite impressed with what I saw. For starters, if you forget your coupons at home, Target portrait studio has some available at the front counter. I suppose it helps lure walk-in traffic, but I have been to many in-store portrait studios that wouldn’t dream of offering you discounts on sessions … Continue reading

Wednesday’s Weekly Challenge-Multi-Picture Layout

For some scrappers, they always do multiple pictures on a layout. So, this may not bee too hard of a challenge, but for me it is hard sometimes. I love to take a lot of pictures, and I love the look of a scrapbook page with just one photo on it that is the focal point of the page. So, how do I solve this problem? I can either not scrap all the photos I take, or I can scrap more layouts with more pictures on the page. This can be challenging. Recently, I did a blog post titled, Fitting … Continue reading

How Often Do You Take Pictures With Your Cell Phone?

I don’t own a pimped out smartphone that can take super clear shots, and then turn them into a mini music video. In fact, I don’t own a cell phone with picture-taking capabilities at all. I wish I did, but I don’t. Rather, I have remained loyal to my fully functional traditional digital camera… that does not allow me to call friends or family. Typically, I don’t think twice about what I don’t have. Instead, I prefer to focus on what I do have and quell the green-eyed monster. However, after attending the first day of school with my first … Continue reading

Easing Into Back-to-School

When I was pregnant with my daughter my main focus was to give birth to a healthy child. I considered all of the factors that would make her environment safe and secure. I also thought about what she would look like and what type of personality she would have. Though, never in the nine months she was in my womb, did I consider how she would react to school. Turns out she loves it. However, she often reveals that she does miss me during the nearly eight hours we are apart. Ditto here. To ease her transition from half-day kindergarten … Continue reading
