Good Neighbor – A Magazine Ad from State Farm

We are all inundated with advertisements. Insurance companies have learned to be clever with the types of ads they produce. State Farm has created an advertisement that appears, at first glance, to be a magazine. It got my attention. I just got back from a week long vacation (that included a family wedding). It amazes me how many different forms of advertisements I have seen in that span of time. Most of the ads were unmemorable, and I forgot about them the instant they went away. The airline pilots rattled off a sales pitch to the passengers about a credit … Continue reading

For a thin person, it is FUN!! For an average sized person, it is bearable! For an overweight person, it is downright discouraging, intimidating, and positively, absolutely stressful. Shooting Fourth of July Fireworks

Now that you know what images to snap at your Fourth of July parades, picnics and parties let’s turn our attention to the main event of any Independence Day celebration—-the fireworks displays. Here are some tips to keep in mind before the sparks start flying on the Fourth: Snapping Sparklers Last year I tried unsuccessfully to capture my 3-year-old using her sparklers to draw pictures in the night sky. However, during a Chinese New Year celebration a few months ago, I learned a trick from a photo expert. First, to best capture sparkler sky writing you should place your camera … Continue reading

It would be a shame not to make the most of these Independence Day events. So grab your camera, charge up those batteries, go out and splurge on a new memory card (or extra rolls of film) and get ready to snap your loved ones in action as they proudly celebrate our country’s 232nd birthday. Fourth of July Parade I addressed the challenges involved … Continue reading

Photo Challenges

“Mommy take my picture with Sue.” It was a request made by my then 2-year-old daughter while we were visiting Sue the T. Rex at Chicago’s Field Museum a while back. She knows I am an avid photographer so asking for a picture with the colossal fossil was seemingly a no-brainer. Of course, getting the massive meat-eating monster in the same frame as my tiny tot proved to be a challenge larger than the bony creature itself. Sue measures forty-one feet long from nose to tail, and twelve feet tall at the hips. Try getting that in a shot without … Continue reading

Should I Delete This Picture?

If you have a digital camera this is a question you have likely asked many, many times. I am in the midst of preparing for my family’s annual trip to Hawaii and recently sat down to purge photos from my camera that have been in there since last spring. As you can tell this task was a long time coming. The exercise proved to be time consuming, but productive. I can’t say that I came away with any earth-shattering revelations (besides not waiting 10 months to go through your shots); however, I know that I am not the only snap … Continue reading

Photography Week in Review for January 21, 2007-January 27, 2008

How many times have you thumbed through a camera manual and wondered what the letters RAW, NEF, TIFF and JPEG stood for? And how many times have you returned from vacation with more shots that needed to be deleted from your digital camera than ones that you considered framing? Finally, when was the last time you seriously evaluated your work in an effort to improve your shots? These are just a few of the topics I discussed in the Photography Blog this past week. Each post includes tips and answers to some of the most commonly asked questions involving the … Continue reading
