Vacation Camera

I have a friend who owns multiple cameras; including one he uses exclusively when he and his family go on vacation. He had a bad experience getting his camera through airport security on a recent trip to China, so now he doesn’t take his ultra-fancy picture-taking tool on extended vacations. Rather, he takes one of his spare cameras. Did I mention he is loaded? If you are like me and live on a budget, then you simply take care of what you have because in all likelihood it will be a while before you can come up with the money … Continue reading

Vacation Photo Ops

Thousands of schools across the country, from California to Michigan, New York to Georgia, are closed this week. Some districts call the break “winter recess,” others refer to it as “ski week” while others combined President’s Day with furlough days and simply told students to stay home. Here in Wisconsin, it’s business as usual (much to my 7-year-old’s chagrin); however, our friends, who live in Michigan, are enjoying a lovely pre-spring break in the tropics. Since they took off on Sunday, I’ve received no less than six links to their online photo gallery—-the clearinghouse for all their fab vacation images. … Continue reading

Improving the Look of Vacation Scrapbooks

The very first scrapbook I ever made had a vacation theme. I spent the summer crisscrossing the United States and collected mountains of memorabilia and nearly 1000 photos. The project was massive. In fact, it was really too big now that I look back on it. Still, I was determined to find a way to display all of the memories I made on my summer-long journey. When I page through the book now I notice that it has way more photos than anything else. If I had the chance to do it over I would have probably added more embellishments … Continue reading

More Ways You Can Protect Your Camera While on Vacation

In my previous blog I listed ways you could protect your camera while vacationing in a place with frigid temperatures. This blog is tailored to help those of you who are planning to take your camera to a tropical location. While the weather might be pleasant other elements could prove detrimental to your camera—-if you are not prepared. Before you head off on your island getaway consider purchasing a lens adapter and a skylight filter. Each provides added protection from the elements for both the lens barrel and the lens itself. Also, you’ll want to make sure your camera bag … Continue reading

Protecting Your Camera While on Vacation

Spring break is in full swing here. Some of our friends flew to Colorado to get in some late season skiing (that was before we got 15 inches of fresh snow on Good Friday) while others headed to Florida to escape the winter blues. We just returned from Hawaii where my camera got a serious workout at the beach. Regardless of where you vacation this year it is important to remember some basic tips to ensure your camera doesn’t become a causality while you’re away from home. COLD CLIMATES If your family enjoys tearing though fresh powder in cold weather … Continue reading

What to Shoot While on Vacation

It may seem like a no-brainer… when you are on vacation you take pictures of your family and friends in front of various local attractions, right? Yes and no. Yes, if you are traveling with your family, but for those who are taking a solo trip there are other ways you can capture the mood and culture of an exotic location without including familiar faces in every shot. I would start by taking pictures of local signs, buildings and famous landmarks. Just be mindful of the sun’s position before you press the shutter button. You’ll typically get better results if … Continue reading

With summer rapidly coming to an end you are probably wondering what to do with all those great vacation shots you have stored on your digital camera. Family Vacation at Dollywood

Just about everyone loves Dolly Parton and for one of the best family vacations, you can visit her theme park – Dollywood. Located in the beautiful Smoke Mountains of Tennessee, this park is spread out over 125 acres. While there are many excellent theme parks, Dollywood has been rated among the top contenders. We visited a few years ago and I have to say – I WAS IMPRESSED! Some of the rides in the park include The Thunderhead, an award-winning wooden roller coaster, as well as live entertainment, glassblowing, woodcarving, kiddie rides, and much more. If you want some place … Continue reading

Graduation and Vacation Photography

It is almost the end of May, and a good time to talk about the end of school, graduations, vacations and other fun beginning of summer activities. Of course, the best way to record and remember all these special events is through photography. Unless you have a photographic memory, which works almost as well, except that the photos are stored on the hard drive of your memory, and there is no way to download those photos for practical use. For photos of graduations, you will have the best results if the graduation is held outside on the football field or … Continue reading
